Casita Completea, and off to Mexico

Image
Feb 27 It’s Thursday; Tuesday evening we came back from an evening in Portland and the casita (ADU) was complete and cleaned up. YAY! Yesterday we started ‘moving’. We won’t move in until our return from our travels in Mexico but I started moving bathroom and kitchen stuff we don’t need on a daily basis. It is like playing house. It is so much fun after living with construction dust and debris. Ron worked on moving some of our stored boxes to the garage. He has been building shelves and they are starting to fill up. We also have several metal shelves in one of the bedrooms where we have stored our 63 boxes of stuff. We will work on moving today and tomorrow in between cleaning the house. Wayne and Dana will stay here part of the time we are gone. We have packed for our Mexico trip where the temps may go into the 40’s at night and up to the high 70’s during the day. Sunscreen is packed as we will be at an altitude of 6,000 ft. in San Miguel de Allende (SMA). We lea...

A plan comes together, at long last.

Feb 23, 2020 We have had numerous promises of ‘completion dates’ on our ADU. The final inspection was Friday and we passed. Now there are some non-code items to finish; painting, punch list items and clean up. Hopefully, all will be completed by Tuesday. We leave Friday for Mexico and hopefully, I will be posting on a more regular basis. We have grown weary of construction dust, dirt and debris that finds its way into every room of the house even with the two doors to the construction closed. I sweep regularly. All the floor mats are constantly dirty. I spend time carrying them outside to sweep them clean only to have them get dirty within minutes. I look forward to the end of construction. OK, enough griping. This week we had sunshine every day so I spent time daily weeding the back-yard shrubs/bushes. I don’t think they have ever been weeded. In some cases, the weeds were taller than the bushes. I managed to complete 12 bushes including five blueberry bushes. I have ab...

A big disappointment but plans continue to evolve. Family on the horizon

Feb 6 The saga continues. This weekend we attended a performance of Mini Musicals, a delightful entertainment with six vignettes of 15-minute musicals, each telling a different story. This is a yearly event and we always try to go if we are in town. John Oules is the producer and a long-time friend. I saw him when I picked up our tickets at will call. He and his partner live in San Miguel de Allende. I told John we would be there in March and he looked at me and said ‘we’re moving, probably to Santa Fe’. I was stunned for a moment then I asked ‘is it because of the cartels?’ He said yes. This pretty much convinced me that our dream of living there is not going to happen. We have already booked a studio apartment for a month and it has a no cancel clause for the first 30 days. We will go there but not bother to look for a place to live. Needless to say, this a huge disappointment. I have written to two others who live there who said ‘It isn’t a problem; the cartels are not in the...
