trying to get home, but preparing if we can't

March 15

We slept in because we stayed up watching Tom Hanks in the Mr. Rogers movie until 12:30 last night. Today the governor of Guanajuato state announced there were no reported cases of the virus in San Miguel. He also announced that all government-sponsored events in the state were being canceled effective today until further notice. Brilliant… starting to limit gatherings BEFORE the virus is diagnosed here.

Ron tried a long time online and on the phone to get tickets home before our scheduled departure on April 7th. The systems are so overloaded that every phone call resulted in a recording in Spanish and then the call was disconnected. Online, it took forever to get to the site and after inputting all our information, the screen would revert to the first screen being blank.

We remain calm and will persist but we know we may have to weather this storm here. We walked to the large modern grocery store and it was crowded but manageable. We got a few items being hopeful that we may be able to leave this coming week but remain realistic that may not happen. Some shoppers were like us, with a few items and others were clearly panic shopping. We took a taxi home. After putting groceries away, we went to lunch a 2:00 and were the only patrons. We went to another store to get items the bigger store didn’t have. We plan to spend the rest of the day relaxing at home and making a meal here for dinner.

We made a quinoa salad for dinner. When we went grocery shopping, we made a decision to pare down ingredients because there were some tickets available to Dallas early Wednesday morning. Ron couldn’t purchase them because the system wasn’t functional. So our salad wasn’t as elaborate as usual, but it was adequate. I soak veggies in disinfectant for ten minutes before using them. Our kitchen here is quite limited in equipment such as no mixing bowls, only soup bowls, so I soak veggies in a pot and it isn’t deep enough to submerge some veggies like bell peppers so I cut them up and soak them. It took a while to get the ingredients disinfected given the limitation of the pot. It was a simple meal of toast and quinoa salad. We will continue with simple meals.

We are grateful to be in good health and wish the same for all of our family and friends.
8:30 p.m. I received an email from Delta out of the blue and we were able to book a flight using miles and are coming home Wednesday. It isn’t a good flight but who cares. We are coming home and we are relieved.
